Night markets we ❤️ you

The food is amazing, the atmosphere festive and there’s something lovely about the appreciation of good food by tourists and locals alike. Some of the magic must be that its dark and the food is flipping and frying on all sides as you stroll through the stalls. The smells of…well mostly hot oil, 🙂 but spices and chicken and incense. Some of the special magic is surely the novelty, both of the mulling about gawking but in the new foods and drinks and flavors. But beyond all that it has just been a special adventure for our whole family to enjoy. We’ve been enough times (and plan to go tonight one more time) that the girls know the majority of the stalls and delight in going to the fry lady and picking out, ordering, and paying for their lumpia, wontons and donut holes all by themselves (that’s right, thats a one stop shop) suksima!! We’ve loved sitting on our plastic stools, sipping some vibrant smoothie, talking about the sights we’ve seen, the books we’ve read, trying to come up with new “Stories when you were little” to entertain and the places we’re looking forward to going the next day.

Gado gado, nasi campur, and satay
Dragonfruit smoothies
The third time to this night market i couldn’t deny Marion yet again a chance to ride on the merry go round. Even if it was way too small for her. She loved it.
Gianyar market, clockwise: fresh produce, dyed chicks and knock off watches, goldfish and other fish, nasi campur with fish
Sindhu market satay
Sindhu market, buah campur es, double straw smoothies, fried omelette wrap

maybe part of the pull of the night market is that you just never know what you’ll find.

Chicks! Teal…and…magenta…chicks?

Whatever all the reasons they delight us, they do. Such a fun, special treat of deliciousness and memories.
