Ah Bali, sweet Bali

Ok, I’m cheating, this meal was from the night market. But look! Lettuce!!

And savory, salty, umami, bitter… we’re so far letting our taste buds lead the way on this magical island, and it is not disappointing. Our preferred method for finding delicious food seems to be: bumble along a hot dusty road until you come across a cart with something edible. Cart is a loose term: sometimes it’s the tricked out back of a motorcycle that has a pot of hot broth on one side and the fixings for something close to Pho on the other; sometimes a one person standing-room-only box with a griddle for making crepes; sometimes a cart with fried (goreng) everything (think lumpia, eggs, tempeh); and sometimes it’s the front of a shop that has a trough style BBQ for grilling fresh satay before shoving them into a bag of peanut sauce and sweet soy sauce for us to eat as we continue to hoof it to our destination.

It’s of course not just food that has taken our hearts here. The skies have been clear and blue, the sun hot but not humid and our home is AMAZING. We’re so happy with our little place (after our previous tight quarters. it’s really not so little with three bedrooms, a workable kitchen and a patio/lawn space all to ourselves!!). Oh and don’t forget the pool!! It’s in the shared front yard but that has not deterred the girls (or us) from making it feel completely our own.

The house just in its nuts and bolts would be enough: the space, the A/C, the pool, the big beds and white linens and non-smelly bathrooms. But it’s the little details that put it beyond: the little designs in stonework, the plumeria and hibiscus trees, the palm fronds that surround the lawn and the green manicured vine/bush that climbs along the walls. lush. Verdant. Gorgeous. And did I mention the shrines? Stone totems around every turn, all ornately carved and tended to with small banana leaf and incense offerings that gives it that extra authentic and simultaneous exotic shade that is enchanting.
